Dawki – Hidden gem of India

Throughout my life I have always been fascinated with water, fascinated by its beauty, fascinated by the number of forms it can take, fascinated by its nature. Water can be calm and violent too, it can be soothing and disturbing too, it makes sea and covers mountains too in the form of snow. I always wanted to visit a place where water would look surreal, as I’ve always seen in images on the internet. Let me confess that every time I saw these images with pristine blue waters I would question myself if it really is true or is it photo-shopped.

However on my recent journey through north-east India I discovered these surreal water-bodies that I always dreamt of. This was by far most exquisite trip of mine till date.

Dawki is a town in Meghalaya state of India, it is located in southern border of the state. Dawki also shares border with our brotherly nation of Bangladesh. Umngot river is the star attraction of this town. National border of India-Bangladesh lies around 3kms from the suspension bridge over the Umngot river. Not to be missed is boating in the river Umngot, You would gain eternal pleasure while boating through waters where you could clearly see the sand on the riverbed even when it’s around 5-10 feet deep. The water is crystal clear and the river is a popular fishing spot among locals.

Let me uncover this hidden gem of India – Dawki.

Epilogue

Dawki is a town in state of Meghalaya. It shares its border with brotherly nation of Bangladesh. Umngot river that flows through Dawki is popular for its surreal greenish water. Many would think the green color is attributed by presence of algae, which is not the case. The river has crystal clear water. Dawki is definitely one of the hidden gems of India.

    • Dear Simanta,
Thanks for taking time to go through the blog.
I absolutely agree with you, NE is amazingly beautiful and am sure endless things to discover yet. Can’t wait to get back there 🙂

    • Mini,
Am glad you liked it. Go there and you would discover a piece of heaven for sure.
We stayed in Cherrapunji aka Sohra in Hotel Sai Mika. Its a beautiful property but very ill managed. Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort is a good option that would cost around 3.5k – 4k per night.
I will soon be adding a separate blog with complete itenary and other must see places. Stay tuned.
      Keep travelling.
